Anxious About The Holidays? Give Yourself the Gift of Counseling
Nearly 9 out of 10 American adults said that they felt overwhelmed by the holiday season last year. This holiday season, plan ahead to care for your mental health, and consider giving yourself the most meaningful gift of all.
At Genesis Psychiatric Solutions, board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Ifeanyi Olele provides psychiatric services for patients with anxiety or depression all times of the year, and especially during the holiday season.
Whether you're dealing with anticipated family conflict, financial issues, or existing mental health issues that manifest more strongly during the winter months, there are ways to minimize your discomfort.
Set a budget
Holidays can make you feel like you have to spend and spend to show your love. Instead, make memories with your family through special experiences, like baking together or going to see Christmas lights. Give small gifts that are special to and have unique meaning for the recipients.
Say “no” when needed
Everyone needs volunteers during the holidays. It’s OK to opt out if you have enough on your plate. In fact, say exactly that when asked to add yet another holiday chore to your list: “Sorry, my plate is already overflowing. Thank you for thinking of me, but I just can’t this year.”
Then consider the matter closed. You don’t owe anyone your mental health by way of overload.
Holidays aren’t about harm
Holidays are supposed to be about fun and family, but what about when they aren’t fun?
If spending time with insensitive or uncaring family members causes you harm, skip it. Hang out with people who treat you with respect and make good memories instead of subjecting yourself to further trauma at the hands of people who were supposed to care for you the most.
Love the one you are
Mental health can hang over your shoulder and tell you you don’t deserve nice things or fun times. Shut off that voice and treat yourself within reason, while reminding yourself that you are enough — wherever you are in your personal journey and whatever you may be going through.
Give yourself the gift of counseling
If the holidays are a minefield for you, for whatever reason, it can’t hurt to get some professional help. You can talk out what’s bothering you and learn new tools and coping methods. Better mental stability can be the greatest holiday gift of all.
